Data Sources and Legal Framework

CalgaryPermits operates under the legal framework established by the Province of Alberta. The service provides access to building permit information that is publicly available through the City of Calgary's Open Data Portal.

FOIP ACT

Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act (Alberta) governs public sector data. Building permits constitute public information by law.

PIPA ACT

Personal Information Protection Act (Alberta) governs private sector data. We do not aggregate permit holder personal data from public sources.

Information We Collect

The City of Calgary's Open Data Portal publishes building permit information including:

  • Permit holder name (individual or company)
  • Property address (street address and community)
  • Project description and type (New Construction, Renovation, etc.)
  • Timeline (application date, issuance date)
  • Estimated project cost (when available)

IMPORTANT: The City of Calgary does not publish personal phone numbers or email addresses in their Open Data Portal for privacy reasons. Contact information must be obtained through direct outreach.

Your Account Information

To provide access to Calgary building permits, we collect the following information:

Email address — For account creation and verification

Full name — For account identification

Saved permits — Your personal list of saved leads

Usage analytics — To improve service performance

How We Use Your Data

Your account information is used exclusively for:

  • Providing access to the Calgary building permit dashboard
  • Sending email notifications when new permits match your filters
  • Authenticating your account and managing your subscription
  • Improving our service through analytics and usage patterns

WE NEVER: Sell, rent, or share your personal information with third parties. Your data is encrypted and stored securely.

Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL) regulates commercial electronic messages. CalgaryPermits is designed for CASL compliance:

  • Implied consent: By signing up, you consent to receive service-related emails
  • Unsubscribe mechanism: Every email includes an easy unsubscribe link
  • Identification: All emails clearly identify CalgaryPermits as the sender
  • Contact preferences: We recommend postal mail or phone contact when permit holder email is not publicly available
